Reinforced Cement Concrete

Cement concrete is a heterogeneous mixture of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and water. Concrete can take compression but has a relatively low tensile strength and ductility which can be counteracted by the inclusion of reinforcement having higher tensile strength and ductility.

Normally this reinforcement is steel though other materials such as glass fibre can be used.
Steel is used as a reinforcement in concrete because the coefficient of thermal conductivity of steel and that of concrete is nearly same.
